Background Information – Ed Burgos & Games Master Kent

My name is Ed Burgos and I live in Sevenoaks. Alongside my work as a lighting technician in the West End and at the STAG Theatre, I have spent more than 20 years working in education, both in the UK and overseas.

During that time I have taught students of all ages and backgrounds,
including several years at Yonsei University and Korea University in South Korea.

I have been a Dungeons & Dragons player and Dungeon Master for many years and have seen first-hand how tabletop roleplaying can help develop confidence, creativity, communication, teamwork and problem-solving.

While the game is often associated with fantasy and adventure, I believe its greatest strength is bringing people together around a table to tell stories, solve challenges and build friendships.

Earlier this year I founded Games Master Kent, with the aim of introducing more young people to tabletop role playing through welcoming, beginner-friendly experiences. My goal is to make the hobby accessible to those who may never have considered trying it before, regardless of previous experience.

Over the past few months I have been working in partnership with House in the Basement Youth Café, a Sevenoaks Town Council youth facility, to develop a pilot programme of free Dungeons & Dragons taster sessions for local young people aged 11–17. The sessions have been carefully
designed for complete beginners and combine imaginative storytelling with teamwork, creativity and collaborative problem-solving in a safe, structured environment.

The growing popularity of Dungeons & Dragons through television, streaming and popular culture has inspired many young people to become interested in the hobby, but there are often very few opportunities for complete beginners to try it in a welcoming environment. I hope these sessions will provide that opportunity and, if successful, become the start of a regular programme for young people in Sevenoaks.
