Unlock Your Creative Potential and Master the Art & Craft of Writing through Fun and Games!

From the age of four when we start school, through to secondary school, college, university, and into adult life, we spend so much of our time writing and being told what to write. Yet for many people, creative writing is a choice – for relaxation and enjoyment. Finding time to write creatively is a challenge, but when you do carve out some time for yourself, it’s important to remember to bring in the fun and games. According to Leon Conrad, a multi-award-winning storyteller and author of Master the Art & Craft of Writing, going back to the basics and putting fun into the equation can bring a fresh approach to learning and creative writing outside of the classroom or working environment.

If grammar is a daunting concept, or you’re lacking in inspiration, but you’d like to learn more about the craft of writing, leading author Leon Conrad recommends the transformative power of play in enhancing writing skills.

Revolutionising Creative Writing through Play

Leon specialises in teaching talented young writers through his tutoring practice. He invites them – and you – to play with sounds, with words, with language, with story. His book, Master the Art & Craft of Writing, features 150+ writing games and activities to spark and liberate creativity within you – whatever your age or ability.

“The more you see language as a living thing, the more your writing will come to life. See the meaning in it; you will see it. Play with it in your imagination. Open its secrets. Play with them, dive through them, immerse yourself in their quality, and explore their deep meaning,” writes Conrad in his new book. “Play the game of wirting. Play the game of life.”

Writing game 1: Words spoken in and from silence

If we describe silence, we break it, so how can we evoke its ineffable quality? Is silence always the same, or does it have different qualities in different contexts? In this game, your task is to describe three kinds of silence as playfully as possible, e.g., the silence of the deep, the silence of secrets, the silence of deep sleep, the silence of peace, the silence of joy, the silence of sorrow…

Example:

I walked the silent space at the cusp of every ocean wave
willed by the energy which drives the currents of the sea~
moved by the spirity of eternity

I sang
I sang the song of silence
the silence of the ocean
the silence of the sea
spanned by eternity

Why Play is a Game Changer for Writers

Research shows that play isn’t just child’s play—it’s a powerful tool for teenagers and adults, too! Play reduces stress, improves brain function, and sparks creativity. Conrad’s playful approach aligns perfectly with these findings, offering writers an innovative way to engage their creative minds and silence their inner critics.

“Learning should be rigorous, but also fun,” says Conrad. “I use games, riddles, and puzzles to make the process engaging. I never want to bore my students the way I was bored as a child!”

Fuel Your Creativity and Avoid Burnout

Beyond learning new skills, Conrad believes that integrating play into your routine can help prevent burnout and promote innovative thinking. “Playing engages your creative brain and helps you approach problems from fresh perspectives,” Conrad explains. “It’s about working smarter, not harder!”
