The South of England Agricultural Society’s Autumn Show & International Horse Trials returned with a resounding success this past weekend (23rd & 24th September), treating thousands of visitors to a spectacular celebration of rural life, equestrian excellence, and countryside pursuits.
Held at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex, it was the second time that the Autumn Show & Game Fair had joined forces with the International Horse Trials to create one spectacular event, and it was a huge success for visitors and competitors alike.
A true highlight was undoubtedly the prestigious South of England International CCI*** and CCI** Horse Trials, affiliated with the esteemed Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). Celebrating its 16th year, this competition attracted hundreds of competitors, including top UK and international riders who showcased their equestrian skills in showjumping, dressage, and cross-country phases. Spectators were treated to a thrilling display of horsemanship, witnessing some of the sport's finest athletes vie for victory.
In addition to the equestrian competitions, attendees could immerse themselves in various countryside pursuits and interactive activities such as fly fishing, archery, axe throwing, terrier racing, and more.
Throughout the weekend, captivating displays of sheep shearing and birds of prey added to the show’s charm. And a dedicated zone showcased vintage agricultural vehicles, and a Scammell rally delighted enthusiasts of all ages.
The event also paid homage to the harvest season with competitions and showcases from local Women’s Institutes and Young Farmer’s Clubs, alongside the South of England Honey Show and traditional horticulture competitions in vegetables, fruits, flowers, and flower arranging.
For dog enthusiasts, the show delivered an array of attractions, including terrier racing, impressive displays by long dogs, rare breed gundogs, and working gundogs. Dog owners and their furry companions even had the chance to participate in scurries, adding to the fun.
Children were not left out, with an activity trail, an animal barn, a funfair, and more. Visitors could also indulge in delectable food and drink from local traders while exploring fantastic shopping opportunities.
The event was organised as part of the Society’s charitable remit to showcase and celebrate agriculture, horticulture and other countryside industries. Any profits from the weekend will now be put towards helping the Society fulfil its educational work, from inspiring school children to learn about food production and appreciate the value of our countryside, to offering grants and bursaries for people training and working in the farming sector or providing conferences and forums for farmers and landowners.

Tickets to the Winter Fair 2023 are available now from www.seas.org.uk; they are limited, so visitors are advised to book in advance to guarantee entry. Tickets cost £8.75 for adults and £7.25 for senior citizens/students. A 10% online discount is also available until midnight Friday 10th November. Under 16s go free (suggested donation of £2 for children aged 5-15). This show is not recommended for dogs due to the many indoor areas where dogs will not be admitted.
