“Outstanding” Ranked Great Oaks College Announces Relocation to Enhance Learning Opportunities for Young Adults with Learning Difficulties

HOUNSLOW, UK, 23 October – Great Oaks College, a dedicated institution for young adults with severe learning difficulties, is excited to announce its relocation to a new, larger facility that will further enhance their already “outstanding” mission of preparing students for active, independent lives. Founded in 2018, the college stands out as a supportive and empowering environment for young adults with significant learning challenges.

The new campus, located in Sunbury on Thames (with a smaller site located in nearby Hounslow), has been designed to provide an enriching environment that fosters innovative curriculum and develops the skills necessary for greater independence. With the new and improved facilities, the college aims to increase the opportunities available to students, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.

Key highlights of the new location include:

  • Expanded Learning Spaces: The new facility features modern classrooms and specialised areas for vocational training, life skills development (an onsite Cafe), and sensory experiences (hydrotherapy pool), tailored to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Enhanced Resources: There will be additional tools and technologies to support personalised, bespoke learning programs and pathways, allowing each student to thrive at their own pace.
  • Community Engagement Opportunities: The new location will facilitate increased partnerships with local businesses and organisations, providing students with real-world experiences and opportunities for social interaction.
  • Focus on Independence: The dedicated staff will continue to implement various pathways that prioritise life skills and personal development (horticulture training area), ensuring that each student is well-prepared for active participation in their communities.

Nickyie Thomas, Principal at Great Oaks College, said:  “We are thrilled to move to a new site that allows us to expand our offerings and better serve our students. This relocation is a significant step forward in our superior commitment to fostering independence and preparing our students for meaningful lives.”

The April 2023 Outstanding Ofsted report of Great Oaks College sing the college’s praises, stating how “learners thrive” in its “welcoming and inclusive” environment and “they value the support they receive from the kind and caring staff”. Learners also felt “safe” at the college, with educators delivering relevant lessons on essential safety topics to navigate school, work, and the wider community, confidently.

Although the physical site is changing, the mission of Great Oaks College remains unchanged; to empower students to control their futures and lead meaningful lives while collaborating with families, therapists, and professionals to help students achieve their aspirations. The dedicated approach of the school ensures a well-planned transition from education to adulthood, promoting successful outcomes for students and their families.

In 2023, due to increasing national demand for SEND school places, Hounslow Council asked Great Oaks College to find a new home. Since then, the college has been preparing for the move, by finding a new home, and keeping staff and students up to date through our website and newsletters.
