The 86th anniversary of the Battle of Britain was commemorated in Haywards Heath on Sunday 13th September, with a special service and parade held to remember those who fought and lost their lives during the Battle.
The service was organised by the 172 Haywards Heath Squadron and took place at the War Memorial on Muster Green, bringing members of the community and local organisations together to pay tribute to those who served.
The service included readings and a selection of poems before The Roll of Honour.
The Town Mayor of Haywards Heath, Cllr Duncan Pascoe, laid a wreath at the War Memorial and led the Act of Rededication, reaffirming the commitment to remember those who gave their lives in service.
Cllr Duncan Pascoe, Town Mayor, said: “It was a privilege to take part in this year’s Battle of Britain service and to lay a wreath at our War Memorial as we remembered the brave men and women who served during one of the most significant periods in our nation’s history.
“The Battle of Britain is an important opportunity to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who fought to defend our country, and to remember all those who lost their lives. It is a privilege to come together as a community to ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.”
The service was conducted by the Revd Charles Sergeant and concluded with the National Anthem, before the parade made its way past the Town Hall.
September 15, 1940 was officially named Battle of Britain Day as it was the day when RAF Fighter Command claimed what proved to be a decisive victory over the German Luftwaffe.
Haywards Heath Town Council would like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s service and parade, and all those who continue to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of the Battle of Britain generation.
