From casting spells to spooky encounters, there’s magic in the air at the multi-award-winning Kent & East Sussex Railway this Autumn. Voted Best Family Experience in Kent two years running in the Muddy Stilettos Awards (2025 and 2026), the heritage railway is putting on two Halloween ‘skelebrations’ over October Half Term.
The Spellbound Express (28th, 29th & 30th October) offers Halloween fun for little witches and wizards with plenty of magical activities. Mix potions with Wendy the Wicked Witch, be amazed by Merlin’s magic and meet a friendly baby dragon. Suitable for 4-11-year-olds, tickets include a magical activity pack to complete onboard and a Junior Spellcaster certificate at the end of the journey, plus free parking at Tenterden Town Station.
Then it’s all aboard the Fright Night Express (30th & 31st October) – if you dare! Tickets include all entertainment and spooky atmosphere, with performances by drummers and a fire-eater, a spooky-themed munch bag for the kids and free parking. After fuelling up with food and drinks at the station, climb aboard to find your seat – but watch out for who might be checking your ticket as you travel through the darkening Wealden countryside! There’s a firework display (weather permitting) at Northiam Station before the return journey to Tenterden. This event is particularly popular with families with 6-11-year-olds but is great fun for adults of all ages too!
Then for those who want to see where a different kind of magic happens – the magic of bringing a heritage railway to life, week in week out – why not book a place on an exclusive Behind the Scenes Experience. Available on selected dates during September and October, small groups of guests will enjoy a full day on the railway – 9am to 4.45pm – visiting areas not normally accessible to the general public, including: the Carriage and Wagon Workshop at Tenterden, the Locomotive Works at Rolvenden and spend time in the Signal Box.
In the company of a knowledgeable guide, you’ll have the opportunity to talk with a range of dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep the railway running. The tour price includes a return trip along the full length of the line and lunch in the Refreshment Rooms at Tenterden.
