Keep it Simple
Keeping fishing simple is key for entertaining children. Don’t overcomplicate the experience or there’s a high chance they won’t enjoy it. Using simple bait like maggots or corn and sticking to easy methods is always best. Even if this means only small fish are caught, it still makes for a wonderful day on the water with your kids.
Shorter Sessions
Kids’ attention spans tend to be smaller than adults, so starting with small trips is always best. Day tickets are available at many venues as are day licences. This means you can gauge if they enjoy the sport, too.
Kids Fishing Gear
Rods are pretty lengthy, so it only makes sense to start off with a shorter kid’s one when it comes to your children. We recommend junior rods like the Fladen Junior Telescopic Combo – very cute for the ultimate beginner. We also recommend the Shakespeare Firebird II Rod and Reel Combo. This rod is perfect for kids getting started, as well as other beginners intrigued by the sport.
You could also purchase the kids their own landing net too. This one from Shakespeare not only looks cute, but will allow your kids to really get stuck in and feel the part.
Keep your Kids Sheltered
Bringing protection and shelter is most important, not only for your kids, but for you too. Especially during the ongoing heatwaves – sun cream, sunglasses and the right clothing are essential. Protective fishing hats are advised for everyone, as well as sunglasses designed especially for days by the water.
You need to bring some form of shelter, too. Whether that be a full on bivvy or simply a brolly, having somewhere where your children can cool down or stay protected from the elements is an important part of their safety as well as their enjoyment.
Snack Time
As well as bringing bait for the fish, remember to bring snacks for your kids. Regular food breads will keep up enthusiasm and energy and won’t mean any early diversions.
So, now you can make yourself a checklist to ensure you’ve got it all. The only thing to do now is check your venue and what type of licence and/or day pass you need. Children under 13 don’t need a licence and kids between 13 and 16 can get one for free – but they still need to have one. You can read more about licences on our blog here and check out the government website for more thorough details.
