Miles Asteri, 37, best known for starring in BBC One’s The Traitors UK last year, is now using his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ adoption, sharing his uplifting personal story as a father. Miles and his husband Pip have adopted two daughters, both currently under the age of six, and their journey reflects not just the potential challenges faced by LGBTQ+ families but also the incredible joy and fulfilment that adoption can bring.
With statistics showing that in 2025 over 4,000 adoptions are expected in England, an increase from previous years, Miles believes there’s a crucial opportunity to empower and celebrate LGBTQ+ families. His adoption journey began shortly after marrying Pip in 2019.
“Adoption was always something we envisioned for our future. Making that first phone call to an adoption agency was daunting but also incredibly liberating. We realised from the beginning that love and connection, rather than societal norms, would define our family.”
While the landscape for LGBTQ+ adoption is changing, there are still notable challenges. Research indicates that same-sex couples represent a smaller percentage of total adoptions, often facing hurdles such as biases, assumptions about parenting roles, and societal expectations. Many LGBTQ+ adoptive parents report feeling isolated during pre-and post-adoption processes, which can lean heavily toward traditional family structures. Society has often focused on mother-centric group support, leaving same-sex fathers navigating pivotal experiences like parenting classes without the necessary community.
However, Miles is quick to emphasise the transformative power of resilience and community, “Through our experiences, we’ve seen that every challenge is an opportunity to redefine what family means. The bonds we’ve formed through our children’s smiles and laughter affirm that we are part of a vibrant, loving community that extends beyond traditional boundaries.”
Studies indicate that children raised in LGBTQ+ families thrive emotionally and develop well socially and academically. The important aspect is love and support, which these children receive from their families.
“The love we provide as parents is unconditional, and the joy our daughters bring into our lives showcases just how powerful that love can be. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching them grow, explore, and express themselves freely in a loving home.”
Additionally, the adoption journey can significantly enrich the lives of adoptive parents. According to Adoption UK, a large majority of adoptive parents report that the experience of adopting has enhanced their lives.
“For us, the journey of adoption has allowed us to connect deeply with our children and with each other as partners. We’ve navigated the challenges together, learning and growing along the way.”
Miles acknowledges the gaps in available support for LGBTQ+ families, particularly around inclusive parenting resources, “It’s essential to forge spaces where all family structures are welcomed and celebrated. The more we share our stories, the more we encourage others to consider adoption as an incredible way to provide a loving home.”
The Worcestershire-based veterinary nurse is now encouraging LGBTQ+ individuals and couples considering adoption to take that first step, “There’s no perfect time to begin this journey, and it’s natural to feel uncertain. Every family is unique, and love knows no bounds. Whether you’re part of a couple or a single individual, you can provide an incredible life for a child in need of a forever home. This journey goes beyond simply creating a family, it’s about building community, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating the remarkable strength found in our diversity. Our experiences as LGBTQ+ parents are not just valid, they contribute richly to the diverse tapestry of what family can truly represent.”
