4Places of Historic Interest and Gardens

Claremont Landscape Gardens, (National Trust) Portsmouth Road, Esher KT10 9JG, beautiful eighteen-century garden in the heart of Surrey, once a Dukes’ retreat and a playground for princesses it is somewhere to escape everyday life with family and friends, large turf amphitheatre, serpentine lake, grotto, Camellia Terrace and Belvedere, look out for the Thatched Cottage, a Victorian refuge filled with fun toys, games, picnic rugs and dressing up clothes, diverse programme of events for the whole family, children’s play area is a great place to run off steam, see website for opening, 01372 467806

Cobham Mill, open from 2-5pm on the second Sunday in the months April to October. There is no charge for entry, though donations are appreciated. We also welcome groups during the summer months by appointment. The Mill is popular with families and we now have a short video presentation which gives an excellent introduction to the Mill’s history. 01932 867387

Farnham Castle Keep, (English Heritage) Castle Street, Farnham GU9 0AG, standing on the crest of a hill overlooking the town of Farnham are the impressive motte and ‘shell keep’ of a castle founded in 1138 by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen.  In medieval times the diocese of Winchester was the richest in England, and Farnham was a favourite residence of the bishops, rebuilt in the late 12th and early 13th centuries but on view are the buried remains of an earlier tower, free entry 01252 721194

Gatton Park, (The Gatton Trust) Reigate, RH2 0TW, beautiful Capability Brown parkland with Edwardian gardens. Stretching 260 acres, the estate lies within the Surrey Hills AONB. Discover the Japanese garden, rock garden and lakeside bird hide. The Wild Things Play Trail features play areas made from natural materials. Open Days are on the first Sunday of the month from February to October 1-5pm. In addition, there is a programme of special events, workshops and children’s activities. Seasonal highlights include Snowdrop Season, Easter Egg Hunt and the Gatton Country Fair. Guildford Castle, Castle Street, Guildford GU1 3SX, ruins, keep and grounds to visit, head to the top of the Great Tower for a 360 degree panoramic view of Guildford,  the tower contains a model of the original castle circa 1300, open April – September: Monday to Sunday 10am – 5pm, March & October: Saturday and Sunday only, 11am – 4pm, October half-term: Monday – Sunday, 11am – 4pm, November – February: closed, the castle grounds are open all year round and admission is free, 01483 444751

Guildford Spike Heritage Centre, Warren Road, Guildford GU1 3JH, in 1906 the Guildford Union Workhouse, which was visible for miles, was a dreadful warning of the fate that would ill befall all who failed to find work, fall sick, become lame or feeble of mind for it was to the Workhouse they must go, this is no stately home, no playground for the rich and famous but the most innovative on-going heritage project, the Vagrants,  see website for opening, 01483 598420

Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey KT8 9AU, Experience the public dramas and private lives of Henry VIII, his wives and children in the world of the Tudor court. Admire Henry’s Great Hall, the infamous Haunted Gallery and the Tudor kitchens. Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden, Black & White Cottage, Stanton Lane, Ockley RH5 5QR, set in ten acres of secluded Surrey countryside and more reminiscent of a tropical rainforest than an English garden, over 150 sculptures in the garden, exotic large-leafed plants, a magical atmosphere surrounds the garden appealing to children and adults alike, opening hours from April to October, Thursday to Saturday – 11am to 6pm, Sunday 2pm – 5pm, 01306 627269

Hatchlands Park, (National Trust) East Clandon, Guildford GU4 7RT, stately home contains exemplary collection of paintings and fine furniture including viewing of the infamous Cobbe Collection, Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers including Bach, Chopin and Elgar, set in 400 acres of multi terrain parkland, stunning bluebell wood in spring, home of Wizard Wix’s Willow Warren – the all natural adventure area for children who are invited to construct dens, explore tunnels and domes, and watch the natural wildlife nibbling at the feeders, fun trails, guided tours of the mansion on Thursdays for a bit of imaginative secret schooling, opening generally, House and Garden 10.30am to 5.30pm,  seasonal variations check website before you go, 01483 222482

Leith Hill Place, (National Trust), nr Coldharbour, Dorking RH5 6LU, an atmospheric house with panoramic views across the Surrey countryside, Leith Hill Place was the childhood home of one of England’s greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, his grandparents, Josiah Wedgwood III and Caroline (née Darwin) moved here in 1847 and his great uncle, the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, conducted experiments in the grounds, open Friday – Sunday, March until November, 01306 711685

Leith Hill Tower, (National Trust), near Coldharbour village, Dorking, come and explore the trails through woodland, heathland, and farmland before climbing to the top of the majestic Leith Hill Tower

Rural Life Living Museum, Reeds Road, Tilford, Farnham GU10 2DL,  country life museum, set in over ten acres of field, woodland and barns, exhibits comprise of a large number of implements and devices marking over 150 years of farming and aspects of village and rural life, events with costumes, crafts, demonstrations and hands-on activities, ‘step back together’ activities for families,  The Old Kiln Light Railway Society provide rides on the light railway (most Sundays, small additonal fee applies). Check the website for opening times.  01252 795571

Painshill, Portsmouth Road, Cobham KT11 1JE, beautiful and unique 158 acre landscaped garden, herons and Egyptian geese by the lake, kingfishers live around the river banks, blue tits and robins in the woods, observe many types of mini beasts and fish swimming in the lake, pretty dragonflies, scary water scorpions, surprising butterflies and all sorts of funny bugs, squirrels and rabbits, and in the early morning maybe a deer trying to hide, look for tracks and other animal signs like eaten nuts and cones. Polesden Lacey, (National Trust) Great Bookham, Dorking RH5 6BD, Royal country retreat, offers an insight into the opulence of a classic Edwardian manor, much to see plus a vintage dress up chest provided, outside 1400 acres of grounds including gardens, woodland, meadow and wide open spaces for play and picnicking, The Squirrel’s Corner Adventure Playground has simple, natural style equipment suitable for most ages and abilities, 4 nature trails of varying length (pick up trail maps and other information at the big white tent in the Dairy Courtyard) binoculars offered on loan to use from the many bird hides and resting areas, May – September croquet (small charge), plus other activities  during most school holidays, opening 10pm – 5pm with seasonal variations, be sure to check website, 01372 452048

RHS Garden Wisley, Wisley Lane, Wisley, Woking GU23 6QB, more that 200 acres and in excess of 25,000 different plants, wander through thick foliage and fragrant flowers along the famous Borders visit The Glasshouse which is the size of 10 tennis courts and houses their world class plant collection of rare and endangered species, Battleston Hill is a woodland garden of significant beauty, wide grassy areas, 2 ponds, specimen trees and a selection of varied flower beds, Winter Walk (with hardy, cold-loving types) and Mediterranean Walk (particularly tropical!) plus numerous flower shows, sculpture trails, annual harvest weekend and more throughout the year, open all year except Christmas Day, Monday to Friday 10am – 6pm, Sat, Sun & Bank Hols 9am – 6pm, (check website for closing in winter), last entry one hour before closing, 01483 224234

Shalford Mill, (National Trust), Shalford, near Guildford GU4 8BS, a ‘living’ place where the graffitied, lime-washed walls and the ancient hessian sacks mingle with the smell of the timbers and tallow, it tells the story of the decline of traditional village work and life, although the machinery no longer works, you can feel the evocative stories of the past in the very fabric of the mill, hear the wonderful story of the Ferguson Gang, a tale of eccentric girls from the 1930s, determined to save the fabric of England for the future, opening see website, 01483 561389

Elmbridge Museum, Civic Centre, 1 High Street, Esher KT10 9SD, Family Fun events (these take place in Hersham Village Hall, KT12 5LT), a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together, having fun with arts and craft activities based around some of the fantastic objects in the collection, sessions take place on a Saturday once a month, from 2pm to 4.30pm and cost in the region of £1.50 per child, children must be accompanied by an adult, 01372 474568

Gatwick Aviation Museum, Valiance-Byways, Lowfield Heath Road, Charnwood, Nr. Haslemere Educational Museum, 78 High Street, Haslemere GU27 2LA, An award winning Museum in the heart of Haslemere with remarkable collections of natural history, human history and geology.  Journey through time and see a 500 million year old fossil, make a dinosaur roar, see the beautiful collection of butterflies and meet the Museum’s mascot ‘Arthur’ the Siberian brown bear. The Museum offers a lively programme of events throughout the year for families with children of all ages based around the collections or national and seasonal events. There are gallery quizzes and trails available every day and backpacks full of fun activities for children to do whilst exploring the galleries. Godalming Packetboat Company, Godalming Wharf GU7 1JL, in Godalming Town, opposite Sainsbury’s, travel the Victorian Way along this unspoilt waterway in Surrey as generation of boatmen before you,  journey on the narrow boat pulled by one of our heavy horses, traverses both river and canal and passes through a lock, a delightful way to discover the National Trust owned River Wey Navigations, public trips are most days from Easter to the end of September, please ring to confirm times of trips (usually 2.00 pm), 01483 414938

Frensham Great Pond, Priory Lane, Frensham GU10 3BT, vast 13th century lake with sandy beaches, woodland trails, bridle paths and heavy on the natural wildlife, ideal territory for twitchers, as you can spot a great many common and rare birds – reed bunting, sedge warbler, great crested grebe, woodlarks and May to September evenings hear the unusual sound of the nightjar, go pond dipping amidst the damselflies and dragonflies or make a den with the fallen branches, explore footpaths through the lovely purple heathers, yellow gorse and deep green bracken, spot the ancient but renovated dam, variety of rare and endangered mini beast style wildlife that thrive on the heath making it a Special Area of Protection and Conservation, best views from Snowball Ridge, which you can see (from underneath!) from the main car park. Holmwood Common: Blackbrook Road, Holmwood, Surrey, RH5 4NX, Dappled woodland and sunny clearings making beautiful countryside for walking, horse riding and cycling. The common is fairly flat and ideal for families to explore, but it can be wet underfoot. The common is home to much of our well-known British wildlife.
