Simple Ways to Get Organised When Moving Into a New Family Home

In surveys, people in the UK tend to list moving house among the most stressful life events. It’s up there with divorce and bereavement. But it’s fair to say that the stress involved with this process can easily be mitigated with the help of the right planning and preparation. Let’s take a look at what we might consider.

Settling Into a New Family Home

When you first move in, you’re likely to feel a sense of excitement. You’re taking the first steps on a long adventure, and everything is likely to feel novel. Getting used to everything can take several weeks, and there’s no real rush to get everything unpacked within the first few days. Make sure that you have the essentials packed separately, and prioritise them. From there, you can take it one room at a time.

This gradual process can help you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by it all.

Making the House Feel Like Home

When you first move in, the chances are that the home will feel empty and a little sterile. But filling it with character straight away might result in clutter that takes months to reverse. Give yourself the time to think about where everything should go, and make sure that the few items you do end up unpacking aren’t contributing to that sense of clutter. Don’t put yourself under pressure to get everything perfect, right away. It might take a few months of living in a given environment before you understand where you can take it.

Planning for How Your Family Will Use the Space

Different families might have different needs from their space. A teenager might benefit immensely from a dedicated space in which to study. A toddler, by contrast, might need a bed and an open space for play.

What everyone needs, however, is storage. The best storage solutions will allow you to avoid accumulating clutter elsewhere in the home. They tend to be space-efficient, which means that they occupy the existing space snugly, or that they’re built into existing furniture. Walk-in wardrobes tend to serve this function very nicely.

Give yourself time to think about the modifications you need. That way, you’ll be able to spend time in the space and think about the changes that will help you make it feel like your own.

Getting Back Into a Family Routine

Once you’ve adjusted to the changes, you’ll be able to settle back into your family’s routines – even if those routines look a little bit different in your new surroundings. This is your chance to break bad habits, and to consciously form new, good ones. Journalling and a little bit of reflection and conversation can make this happen.
