{"id":14396,"date":"2024-05-07T12:53:39","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T12:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefamilygrapevine.co.uk\/west-sussex\/?p=14396"},"modified":"2024-05-07T12:53:39","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T12:53:39","slug":"crawleys-creative-playground-unveils-brand-new-town-wide-murals-across-the-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefamilygrapevine.co.uk\/west-sussex\/crawleys-creative-playground-unveils-brand-new-town-wide-murals-across-the-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Crawley\u2019s Creative Playground unveils brand-new town-wide Murals across the town"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Murals from local, national and international artists include<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Coloured Realms<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>by Oluwafami Babalola;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Broadfield Conversations and Crawley Oak<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>by Eloise Gillow;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Gateway to the World<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>by Alec Saunders; and<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>The Fabric of Crawley<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>by Sarah Pimenta\u00a0<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nThe Murals will launch on Thursday 9 May with a bus tour of the mural sites provided by Metrobus<\/strong><br \/>\nPopping up all over Crawley,\u00a0<strong>town-wide Murals<\/strong>\u00a0will form a part of\u00a0<strong>Creative Playground\u2019s<\/strong>summer season, bringing colourful, inspiring and hyper-local art to the streets of Crawley for all to enjoy.\u00a0<strong>Creative Playground<\/strong>\u00a0asks local residents to explore arts and culture, creating a new sense of aspiration, joy and togetherness in the town.<br \/>\nIn development since August 2023,\u00a0<strong>Creative Playground<\/strong>\u00a0has consulted 350 local residents, and worked with 5 professional artists to create 6 unique murals across the town in key areas across Crawley, chosen by \u2018playmakers\u2019 &#8211; the local volunteers who help shape the programme. The locations were chosen for their high footfall to reach all Crawley residents, and a need to brighten and liven up the area with colour and joy &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Town Centre<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bewbush<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>West Green<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Broadfield<\/strong>. The murals are all accessible by Metrobus routes 10, 2 and 3.<\/p>\n<p>The murals include\u00a0<strong><em>Broadfield Conversations<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><em>Crawley Oak<\/em><\/strong>, both created by realist mural painter\u00a0<strong>Eloise Gillow<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; her first mural based in England;\u00a0<strong><em>Coloured Realms<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by contemporary urban Nigerian artist\u00a0<strong>Oluwafami Babalola<\/strong>\u00a0who creates artworks for public spaces internationally;\u00a0<strong><em>Gateway to the World<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from South London mixed media artist\u00a0<strong>Alec Saunders<\/strong>\u00a0aka\u00a0<strong>Alec London<\/strong>; and\u00a0<strong><em>The Fabric of Crawley 2024<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by print and participatory artist\u00a0<strong>Sarah Pimenta<\/strong>\u00a0who\u2019s first artist studio was in Crawley and who has worked with pupils from The Mill Primary School in Ifield to create this piece.<\/p>\n<p>The murals will launch officially on\u00a0<strong>Thursday 9 May<\/strong>, with a bus tour supported by\u00a0<strong>Metrobus<\/strong>\u00a0taking local residents to visit each mural site, allowing them to discover these colourful, joyful artworks and see their town in a new way.<\/p>\n<p>A final mural from Sussex-born\u00a0<strong>Jac Seifert<\/strong>, who spent her school years in Crawley, will be unveiled later this summer in the\u00a0<strong>Manor Royal Business District<\/strong>. More information will be shared as part of the\u00a0<strong>Creative Playground<\/strong>\u00a0season announcement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ed Wills, Managing Director at Metrobus, said:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cWe\u2019re always proud to support and celebrate the creative community in Crawley. These murals are a great example of all the wonderful things that are happening every day in our local community and across our network. What\u2019s more, the new murals are accessible to everyone and can be visited on Metrobus routes 10, 2 and 3.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendy Bell, CEO Crawley Town Centre BID, said:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cWe were delighted when Kingsgate Car Park was chosen as a location for the large mural in the town centre; as a gateway to the town you cannot help but be impressed by the sheer size and vibrancy of the mural.\u00a0 We are incredibly proud to have been part of this long lasting project and we are looking forward to seeing all the murals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Louise Blackwell and Sophie Eustace, Co-directors of Creative Playground added:<\/strong><em>\u201cSince Creative Playground launched last May people have wanted to enliven the town with bold, colourful art. We\u00a0 are incredibly excited to launch this trail of murals which celebrate the vitality and resilience of local people and the importance of nature to residents.\u00a0 The 9 month process has involved a team of committed and passionate local people and a group of world class artists who have not compromised on their vision for the range and scale of works created.\u00a0 \u00a0 We hope others will be inspired to bring creativity to the streets of Crawley and\u00a0 welcome you to get involved in Creative Playground\u2019s mission to make Crawley a vibrant and inclusive place to live, grow and learn.\u00a0 A place where we dare to dream for ourselves, for others and for the town.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Playground<\/strong>\u00a0asks the question,\u00a0<em>Is Crawley Creative Enough?<\/em>\u00a0These murals begin to answer that question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supported by Arts Council England<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Crawley Borough Council<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Manor Royal BID<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Crawley Town Centre BID<\/strong>.
