History comes alive at Arundel Castle this October half term

Medieval England will be brought to life this October half term as Arundel Castle’s much-loved Characters Through History event returns on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th October 2026.

Families and history fans alike are invited to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and stories of the 12th century as the Castle grounds come alive with costumed historical interpreters, recreating key figures from Arundel’s Norman past. From a crusader and a knight to an archer and the Master Falconer, visitors can expect engaging encounters that open a window onto the Castle’s early years, shaped by siege, strategy and survival. Or find out more about the Castle’s history on one of our First Siege Tours.

Visitors can also marvel at the skills that shaped everyday life with live demonstrations of medieval crafts and weaponry, while a travelling storyteller captivates audiences with lively tales of adventure. Wandering musicians performing on traditional instruments will fill the Castle grounds with the unmistakable sounds of 12th-century England.

For younger visitors aged eight and over, there is also the chance to put their skills to the test with supervised archery sessions, offering an exciting taste of medieval training.

Food and drink will be available from the Castle’s café, coffee shop and tea terrace, or visitors are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy within the scenic grounds as autumn colours reach their peak.

Andrew Lewis, Castle Manager at Arundel Castle, explains more about the event:

“Our Characters Through History days allow us to showcase Arundel Castle in a different light. The Castle itself tells one part of the story, but it’s the people, the demonstrations and the atmosphere that truly transport visitors back to medieval England. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to discover something new, it’s a wonderful way to spend a day out during the October half term.”

Tickets for the Characters Through History days are available at www.arundelcastle.org and are priced from £17.00 per adult and £8.00 per child. Children under five years old can enter for free.
