History will come to life at Arundel Castle this August Bank Holiday as the much-loved Festival of History returns from Saturday 29th to Monday 31st August 2026, promising three action-packed days of living history, spectacular displays and hands-on experiences for all ages.
Set within the stunning castle grounds, the festival invites visitors to explore more than 12,000 years of history through authentic encampments, thrilling battle re-enactments and interactive demonstrations. From prehistoric Britain to the 20th century, discover how clothing, armour, weaponry and military tactics have evolved across the centuries.
Throughout the weekend, expert re-enactors will recreate life from some of history’s most fascinating periods. Visitors can meet Saxon tribes, Roman gladiators, Norman knights, medieval falconers and gunners, while skilled craftspeople demonstrate traditional techniques including blacksmithing, weaving, leatherworking and historic cookery.
The festival programme is packed with live entertainment, featuring dramatic combat displays, medieval artillery*, archery, firearms demonstrations and impressive falconry. Those looking to truly immerse themselves can also enjoy a range of have-a-go activities, including axe throwing, archery, crossbow shooting and craft workshops.
Families are well catered for, with Arundel Castle’s ever-popular kids’ battles giving younger visitors the chance to join the action. Throughout the day, the festival atmosphere is enhanced by musical performances, before the celebrations build towards the colourful history parade and the spectacular Grand Melee, where dozens of re-enactors clash in an exhilarating contest until only one remains standing.
Visitors can make a full day of their visit with a choice of refreshments across the castle grounds. The Knights’ Table serves hearty medieval-inspired meals close to the encampment, while the castle’s café, coffee shop and tea terrace offer a variety of food and drinks. Visitors are also welcome to bring picnics to enjoy on the castle lawns.
Andrew Lewis, Castle Manager at Arundel Castle, said:
