How to handle brighter mornings and the clock change

If your little one has suddenly started waking earlier than usual at this time of year, you’re not imagining it. From experience, this is one of the most common seasonal challenges families have with sleep. While there can be several reasons for early waking, lighter mornings often play a big role.

Understanding why this happens can help you make small, effective adjustments to support better sleep.

Is the light waking my baby early, and what can I do?

Light has a powerful influence on our circadian rhythm – our internal body clock. When morning light enters the room and reaches the eyes, it signals the brain to reduce melatonin production, the hormone that helps us stay asleep.

As sunrise gets earlier, many little ones begin waking earlier too, sometimes as early as 5am.

At Moon Bear Sleep Consultancy, my approach is always gentle and practical. One of the most effective ways to reduce early waking caused by light is simply to control the sleep environment. Here are three simple steps I often recommend to families:

· Use blackout blinds or curtains to keep the room as dark as possible

· Keep the room dark until your desired wake time

· Treat early wakes as night-time – keep interactions calm, quiet, and low stimulation

Even small changes to light levels can make a noticeable difference in those early morning hours.

Daylight savings and baby sleep

Another disruption at this time of year is the clock change. When the clocks go forward, your baby’s routine can feel temporarily unsettled. From experience, this is completely normal – your baby’s body clock doesn’t adjust overnight.

How to handle the clock change

At Moon Bear, I support families to take a gradual and responsive approach. The simplest way to ease the transition is to gently shift your baby’s routine over a few days.

Starting earlier in the week, move naps, feeds, meals and bedtime forward by around 10 minutes each day. By the time Sunday arrives, you’ll be aligned with the new time.

If you’re reading this later in the week, don’t worry. You can still make a small adjustment now and then follow the new time as closely as possible. Most babies adapt within a few days.

Getting outside in natural daylight is also a really effective way to help reset your baby’s body clock.

Gentle and responsive sleep support

Seasonal changes can disrupt sleep for a short while, but they don’t have to lead to long-term early waking. In fact, the clock change can sometimes help rebalance those early starts.

At Moon Bear Sleep Consultancy, I believe in gentle, responsive approaches that work with your child’s natural rhythms, not against them. Every family is different, and my approach is always tailored to what feels right for you and your baby.

I’m Vicky, mum and certified infant sleep consultant based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. I support families 1:1 with calm, compassionate sleep support.

If you’re navigating early wakings, broken nights, naps or any other sleep challenges, I’d love to help.
