Come and experience Horrible Science at Wakehurst this Easter Holiday, based on the best-selling Horrible Science books by Nick Arnold.

There’s a lot more to plants than meets the eye – join us for an exciting line-up of activities to explore the most villainous tricks and secrets of the plant world.

Learn about the weirdest and most horrible plants, from bug-eating monsters to weeds that kill in our variety of horrid activities. Stinky plant workshops, horrible plant games, frightening face-painting, a wicked weeds trail and more will be waiting to lure you in.


Wicked weeds detective hunt

Set off on a chocolate hunt through the woods. Gather clues along the trail to work out which wicked weed suspect is responsible for a ghastly plant murder to claim your chocolate prize.

Gruesome games

Have a go at our gruesome activities in the games zone. Everyone loves learning a foul fact or two and there are lots of gruesome ones behind the doors of our ‘Plant truths’ game. And why not put your knowledge to the test in our ‘Vital veg’ game – can you guess which plants are used in everyday products?

Wanted poster making

Visit our wicked weeds crime desk and create your own ‘wanted poster’, which will remind you to look out for villainous weeds growing all around you.

Horrid science lab

Roll up your sleeves in our real-life lab. Get you lab coat on and investigate foul fungi, meet our creepy carnivorous plants and find out how the venus fly trap catches its prey – mind your fingers!

Stink workshops

What horrid smells can you create at our stink workshop? Mix up different plant ingredients to create your own unique potion to bottle and take home with you.

Botanists hall of fame

Explore our exhibition of famous botanists in the Mansion gallery, learn about their real-life horrible science experiments, and find out where you can see their work in Wakehurst.

Frightening face-painting

Be transformed into a frightening animal, a villainous plant, or your favourite flower at our face-painting stand.

Potty planting

Find out what our super scientists are doing to ensure the survival of our favourite foods. Join us in the Potting Shed to get your hands dirty and plant some of your own to take home with you.
