The presentation of a cheque for £42,000 to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital Respiratory team marked the culmination of a phenomenal year’s fundraising by pupils, parents and staff at Cumnor House Sussex in Danehill.
The money raised by Cumnor for its chosen charity, the BSUH Charity’s Children’s Respiratory Fund, will buy a body plethysmographor, also known as a bodybox, to help treat children suffering from cystic fibrosis and other respiratory issues at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton.
“The ‘bodybox’ is used to measure how much air a patient can hold in their lungs and will benefit children and young people from all over East and West Sussex who attend the Royal Alexandra Respiratory Clinic,” commented Cathy Warde, a Cystic Fibrosis Nurse Specialist at the hospital. “It will be used to help children suffering from many different types of lung conditions – we can look at full lung volumes, total lung capacity and other specific volumes not achievable with any other type of testing equipment.”
Members of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Respiratory team visited Cumnor House Sussex to receive the £42,000 cheque during School Assembly. Jason Lenton, one of the Respiratory Nurse specialists at the Royal Alex, spoke to pupils about the work being done at the hospital to help children and young adults living with respiratory issues. He emphasised how grateful the team were to pupils and staff at Cumnor House Sussex for putting such huge effort into raising such an impressive sum of money.
The organisation of a fashion event, auction of an annual parking space near Haywards Heath station and a generous anonymous donation of £10,000 helped ensure enough money was raised to buy the ‘bodybox’ outright.
It marks the culmination of 19 years of fundraising for Belinda Heinrich, wife of Christian Heinrich, Headmaster at Cumnor House Sussex. During their 19 years at the school’s helm, over £400,000 has been raised for Charities that have been close to the hearts of the whole community at Cumnor House Sussex.
“Every year we select a Charity and embark on a concerted fundraising campaign to raise as much money as we possibly can for that Charity,” commented Belinda. “Our major annual fundraising event is the Christmas Fayre that I organise alongside a committee of Cumnor parents. It is an eagerly anticipated community and school event that is always well attended and attracts a wide array of stallholders selling Christmas presents and festive produce”.
