Pond Explorers at Wakehurst

Pond Explorers at Wakehurst

We had never been all the way down to the Wetlands at Wakehurst before, despite having walked as far as the lake many times; we just didn’t realise the Wetland area was there (evidently we have never read the signs or looked at the map properly, as it is clearly signposted and marked…) so the Pond Explorers session highlighted a new area of the gardens that we won’t overlook on future visits, and it was also a thoroughly absorbing activity for children and adults alike.

The setting is gorgeous, with all the lush green reeds and the wooden seating areas, and the resources have all been taken out of the science lab and transported to the lakeside, so there are magnifying glasses, microscopes and identification sheets for all the weird and wonderful creatures which get scooped up.

Participants are encouraged to use quiet voices when studying the bugs up close and all creatures are returned safely into the water at the end of the session so that they can carry on with their lives, or quite possibly get eaten by something bigger than them – it’s a bug eat bug world in there!
