Amazing and Inspiring Creative Week

Creative Week Year 4 lanterns (Japan) Creative Week Year 6 Ceramic tiles (Egypt) 2 Creative Week Year 3 block painting (India)Burgess Hill School for Girls’ Junior School pupils and children from four local primary schools took part in a Creative Week from 23rd to 27th February 2015.

The theme was ‘Around the World in 5 days!’ and was based on the classic novel by Jules Verne about Phileas Fogg and his quest to travel around the world in eighty days.

Each year group explored a different country that Phileas visited and immersed themselves in the culture, traditions and history of that country.

Mrs Sue Collins, Year 4 teacher and Creative Week coordinator said, “All subjects in the academic curriculum during the week linked to the country being studied. This cross-curricular approach enabled the girls to make greater sense of their learning because knowledge and skills learnt in one subject was used to reinforce and support learning in other subjects.”

Along with pupils from visiting schools, the girls created three-dimensional artwork during workshops with visiting artist Paul Render. The girls produced fans from China, lanterns from Japan, tiles from Egypt and Indian printed fabrics to name but a few of the creations.

Mrs Sue Collins added: “The week inspired the girls to tackle ambitious projects whilst having lots of fun! They developed many essential skills during the week such as co-operation, perseverance and determination.”
