babytodd’s Bump, Baby & Toddler Show is returning to The South of England Showground on 9th March. We heard from the Show Organiser, Sarah O’Connell, who is super passionate about spreading word of the show and just how it all came about…

“We are a Sussex family who decided to take the bull by the horns after a reflective afternoon reminiscing about our parenthood journey. With 8-year-old twin girls, our experience had helped us realise and appreciate the need for offering a platform so that local families can meet their local and national suppliers and services. You don’t know what you don’t know, so by offering the show to Sussex and surrounding families they can become better informed about what is on offer to them and actually meet and connect with the people behind the businesses and websites. We now have some big names joining us too.

With so much on offer, the online options can be overwhelming. High Street store closures mean that families’ options for where they can see, touch and feel are limited when buying in Sussex. At such a special time in the family’s journey, we were keen to share everything under one roof and with a range to choose from. So, babytodd was born!

Life as parents can be really busy, we certainly didn’t come up for air, and we hadn’t appreciated just how much was available to us until much later into parenthood. We are super passionate about sharing an occasion where businesses, who are often otherwise based online, can engage with their customers and for everyone to understand the quality and passion that the exhibitors put into what they offer.”

What can people expect?
“A day, an occasion, an experience to enjoy with family and friends. 3 floors of everything for bump, baby, toddler and more. From prams to nappies, weaning to teethers, nursery & playroom furniture, slings to skincare, toys to classes and so much more. The show offers:

  • A unique blend of exhibitors sharing their products and services – Local & national suppliers
  • Show buggy park and sling library, so families can enjoy the show with their little ones
  • Informative workshops, including Paediatric First Aid and Sleep Support
  • Fun Taster Sessions for the little ones including Baby Yoga and Story Time
  • Fully stocked baby change facilities and quiet feeding area
  • Refreshment hub for a yummy lunch and treats
  • A Goodie Bag for the first 100 pre-registered families to check in on show day

A perfect excuse to hit the pause button, and enjoy a relaxing day where you can submerge yourself in your family and savour the special moment.”

What feedback have you had from previous shows?
“95%* of families attending would recommend the show and 100%* of the exhibitors taking part would do the same. Families loved the show’s blend and quality of local and national exhibitors. When asked at our Sept 18 show, families were very positive about what they saw and asked for ‘more’ of the same, so we are adding an extra floor and exhibitors are expanding their stand spaces.

The family friendly facilities are a big hit too! Workshops with insightful and important information sharing. Fully stocked baby changing areas throughout the venue are a great way to share exhibitor’s products. Families love sharing time in the Taster Sessions and activities for little ones.

As the Show Organiser, we live and learn with each show and develop the show every time to improve and cater for the needs of the families and exhibitors taking part. The show has grown each time and has therefore relocated with each show, but we are very pleased to have found a long-term home at The South of England Showground. We can’t wait to welcome the families back and meet new show visitors too.”

As the summer school holidays come to an end, does anyone else feel like they need another holiday to get over it?

Well apparently we’re not alone as a study of over 2,000 mums in Britain has revealed that nearly 50% of mothers are taking time out for holidays with their girlfriends, in a bid to relax and recharge their batteries, and recover from their tiring family lives.

If your household is anything like mine, then filling the six week break with activities is a complex job of juggling work, holiday clubs and of course play-dates, so it’s not surprising that we are all frazzled by the end! So, in order to get those ever so special lie-ins, it also reveal that that mums are booking breaks without their children more regularly, as a way to reconnect with old friends.

One fifth said they used the break to do more grown-up activities like visiting museums and getting time to read a good book, whilst almost 70% considered the getaway a crucial experience for maintaining their sanity against the pressures of being a modern mum!

I think “mumshine” might be my new favourite word!

Recently we stumbled across an amazingly fun shop that’s had us setting up a huge Christmas list in July! Finding useful things to have around the house that are going to be practical, stylish and fun for the kids but also are cool for adults to have too can be really hard. The reason we’ve fallen in love with Redcandy is their quirky sense of humour; they turn the most mundane of household items into something to smile about that will also help children enjoy keeping tidy.

On the website there’s a huge selection of bright fun animal themed products such as bedside lamps and coat hooks, but www.redcandy.co.uk is full of very nice grown up items too, with plenty of on-trend copper and rose gold beauties to choose from. There are some particularly nice lampshades from Love Frankie and the choice of clocks is incredible – we really were spoilt for choice.

We wanted to brighten up our office and couldn’t resist this stunning copper Karlsson wall clock that looks like a beautiful sunrise in the office every morning as the light shines off it. It’s a huge 50cm in diameter and is a great feature so for £46.50 not bad at all.

For at home we’ve been eyeing up the dinosaur collection as who doesn’t love a diplodocus?! There are egg cups, lamps, toothbrush holders, plant pots, stickers, blackboards… everything for the kids’ bedrooms or playroom. The collection of geometric animal lamps is brilliant for bedtime. We love the polar bear and diplodocus which are £29 each, and the Moon Desk Lamp, which is only £8. If you’re constantly saying “hang your coat up” to the kids every time you walk through the door then putting up some fun coat hooks could just help – like the wall climbing buddies available in different colours.

If you really wanted to go all out with a bedroom theme then Redcandy has wall stickers, lampshades, and some rather large animal shaped bookcases (but we’ll have to save up a bit for those!) and a really fun range of zoo animal portrait cushions. You can even pick up some purple toilet paper if you’re precious about colour matching in your smallest room! The website is definitely worth a visit for present shopping or something fun to brighten up the house. There’s some beautiful Scandinavian furniture too, in more neutral colours ideal for a very stylish hygge baby’s room.

The lovely people at Bear Nibbles sent us some delicious healthy snacks to try – way before they hit the shops, lucky us! We tried 2 different flavours of the new Super Sour YoYos, which are now available to buy in Tesco.

You may already be a fan of the YoYo snacks, because they’re made from fruit, veg and natural ingredients with no added sugar and have lots of good healthy fibre in them too. They’re definitely ideal for lunchboxes, picnics, car journeys and shopping trips! Each packet contains two rolls, which we found was plenty for a filling snack for children and adults. Inside the packets are collectible Secret Spy Adventure Cards with fun things to do, and budding super sleuths can send off for a Spy Kit too.

We loved the packaging because it’s just a fun as what’s inside. And the taste of the new Super Sour YoYos is just delicious. Our little product testers said they were “really yummy” and the grown ups may have sneaked a few out of the box secretly for themselves….

As well as contributing to our five a day, we are told that these count as a “healthy extra b” on the Slimming World plan (check with your consultant though) because they’re very low in fat and packed full of fibre. Also in the ingredients is the super-food Spirulina. So if you’ve a sweet tooth like me and are watching your weight too, Bear YoYos are a great alternative to those big packs of sugar covered sour mix sweets owned by the little golden bear if you catch our drift!

Super Sour YoYos are available in Tesco and Sainsbury’s the rrp is £2.49 per pack of 5. For some delicious recipes featuring some of the Bear range of snacks, have a look at bearnibbles.co.uk

No family is perfect. We all go through rough times, and then those times we can’t live without each other. The dynamic all depends on the size of the family.

Having a large family is enjoyable, but also frustrating at times. One area that comes up often has to do with spending and saving money. Learn money saving hacks for large families that’ll make life easier on everyone.

Clothes & Thrift Shopping for the family

Save money on shopping by looking through hand-me-downs. If something doesn’t fit, it’s important to check if there’s another child who could wear the clothes before getting rid of them. While it’s not ideal, it’ll save the family money. Shopping is expensive and wearing clothes within the family is a great way to save pounds. Another option is to shop at charity shops and nearly new sales to get the best deals. You’d be surprised the amazing deals and types of clothes available at some of the nearly new sales at schools and church halls.

Share transport

If everyone in the household is driving their own car, see if there’s availability to carpool and drop each other off to work and school. You’ll save on car insurance and petrol this way. If there’s a train or public transport, it’s probably cheaper to buy a season ticket instead of relying on the fluctuating cost of petrol. Members of the family may need to make extra stops if you car share, but it’s a smart way to save money. If you must buy a car, see if there’s a used car several of the older kids could share as they learn to drive. Alternatively, you could all get healthy and enjoy a walk to school together!

Cook more eat out less

Cooking more means eating out less. Making your own lunch and cooking family meals will save money. Family meals are also a great time to do some bonding and communicate with each other. Check the consumption of meals eaten out for the whole family for a few weeks, and see where each person can cut back. There are tools out there to help you see exactly how much you’re eating out and the amount of money you’ll save if you change your habits.

Get the kids into the habit of turning off the lights at home

This one’s about saving energy in the home. Turning off the lights is just one way to lower bills. Another way is to time showers and cut back on water. These simple adjustments are easy to do and will help the pocketbook. It’s hard to change habits, but if everyone starts doing it and reminding each other, then it should catch on pretty quickly. Even if the kids aren’t paying the bills, it’s a good idea to make them aware of how their daily habits are affecting the family.

Plan a Staycation

More people in the family means more plane tickets and hotel costs when going on vacation. Instead of travelling to far and expensive places, one idea is to have a staycation. This way everyone participates and there isn’t the stress that comes with spending a lot of money on a fancy trip. Plan the staycation as a group and let everyone come up with an activity that they’d like to do. Consider reserving a hotel or caravan in your city or nearby towns, and enjoying a few nights away instead of staying at home.

Large families are fun, but are also expensive if not monitored. These hacks are helpful for those families trying to save. Budgeting and saving is smart and will be beneficial in the long run.

If you’re keen to save money on days out, check out our discount vouchers page as every issue we have more than 10 vouchers. Or better still, enter one of our competitions for free family days out. Good luck!
