Miller Homes East Midlands has unveiled the judges for its Summer of Sport competition.
Canoe Slalom C2 Olympic hopefuls Matthew Lister and Rhys Davies will be tasked with selecting a sports club or organisation in the East Midlands to receive £500 from the housebuilder.
The competition, which runs until 1 September, has already attracted a high number of entries from across the region. All entrants have to do is pick up an entry form from their nearest Miller Homes development and let Matthew and Rhys know in under 200 words how their club will benefit from the money and what it will be spent on.
Matthew and Rhys train at the National Water Sports Centre in the East Midlands and know first hand the difference extra funding can make:
“The London 2012 Olympics made a huge impact on sport in the UK,” commented Matthew. “Not only did it spur on professionals like myself and Rhys to realise our dream of competing in Rio in 2016, but it also encouraged a whole new generation to take up sport.
“Sports clubs and organisations across the East Midlands do a great job inspiring their members and improving health and fitness, but they rely on donations to keep operating. Even at our level, funding is vital to help pay for kit, which can be really expensive. This is why we jumped at the chance when Miller Homes asked us to be judges. For us to be able to help out other budding sports stars in the area is hugely rewarding.”
As Rhys reveals, their sporting commitments mean that there will be an international element to the judging process:
“We’re actually competing at the World Championship in Prague in September,” said Rhys. “That means we’ll be having the entries sent over to us to read through. So, there will be success for one lucky sports club, and hopefully Matthew and I too.”
For Paul Walters, associate director at Miller Homes East Midlands, Matthew and Rhys were the perfect choice for judges:
“In Matthew and Rhys, we have two young guys from our region giving their all for the sport they love and hoping to represent our country at the Olympics. They know the dedication and hard work it takes to be a success and are perfectly placed to help us decide where the money should go.”
The closing date for entries is Sunday 1st September 2013.
