Gedling Book Festival July 12-14

A new book festival to celebrate local authors takes place in Arnold’s Arnot Hill Park next weekend (12 to 14 July).
The Gedling Book Festival is organised by Gedling Borough Council and writers’ group New Writers UK and includes an array of established and
award-winning authors from the region as well as workshops, children’s activities and more.
Each day of the three day festival has a different theme. Friday 12 July is history day, with talks and Q&A sessions with historic novelists Karen Maitland and Helen Hollick.
Saturday 13 July is Children’s Day focusing on writing for children and the art of storytelling. Man Booker Prize shortlisted author Alison Jackson will be there to talk about her new book and take questions from the audience.
Crime Day is Sunday 14 July, with talks from award-winning author Nicola Monaghan and bestselling crime writer Stephen Booth. Sunday will also see the announcement of the winner of the 2013 Silver Scribes award, New Writers UK’s creative writing competition for the over 55’s. The 20 finalists will be presented with a published anthology of their stories by the Mayor of Gedling.
The event is free and as well as author talks there’ll be refreshments, performances, live music, stalls and a host of children activities.
Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: “This book festival is the first of its kind in the area and we’re delighted that New Writers UK is hosting it here. I’d encourage people to drop in, as there really is something for everyone at this festival.
New Writers UK event organiser, Julie Malone said ; “New Writers UK are delighted to be involved with organising Gedling Borough Council’s first book festival. We hope this will go on to become an annual community event that
showcases new authors and will be proud to participate in any future events with Gedling.”
