IKEA launches new healthy children’s menu developed with nutritionist
• With a third of all children in the UK aged between 2 and 15 overweight or obese, IKEA has developed new healthy meals specifically for children
• The menu, which includes fishcakes and veggie balls, contains sustainably sourced ingredients with no added sugars or salts
• The new children’s range launches in September in all stores
• Meals start at £2.10

This September, IKEA is launching a new children’s menu, created in collaboration with an expert nutritionist, to support and encourage customers to be able to eat in a healthy and sustainable way.
With the rising focus on the food we eat and shocking stats revealing that nearly a third* (31%) of children are obese by the end of primary school, IKEA is responding by providing healthy and balanced meals on their menus for youngsters.
To ensure the food being served not only tastes delicious but also fits within the recommended government guidelines for children’s meals, IKEA enlisted the help of an expert nutritionist to develop the five delicious dishes. With the average child now consuming 20 teaspoons of sugar daily, IKEA has worked hard to ensure that there are no added sugar or salts in any of the meals.
The new menu includes two ranges – aimed at 0-4 year olds and 4-11 year olds – to ensure that each dish within the range is nutritionally balanced for the needs of that age group. Available from September, the new under 4’s menu will include MSC Tuna Pasta Bake and MSC Salmon and Cod Fishcakes, whilst the over 4’s range will feature Quorn Vegetarian Lasagne, Meatballs or Veggieballs with mash and MSC Salmon and Cod Fishcakes.
To ensure the new dishes were not only nutritionally beneficial but would also be enjoyed by kids, IKEA tested the whole range on a number of families before the launch. IKEA understands that children can sometimes be fussy eaters, so made sure that only those dishes that passed the kids taste test and parents’ standards on its nutritional benefits made it into the final range.
Ellie Pniok, IKEA FOOD Commerciality Manager at IKEA UK and Ireland: “At IKEA, we are passionate about improving our customers everyday and we feel that eating nutritional food is a big part of this. We know how hard it can be to find healthy children’s meals when you’re on-the-go, so we’ve developed this new range to ensure kids who are coming in-store are getting nutritional meals that both taste delicious and are reasonably priced.”
The Under 4’s meals cost £2.10 and the Over 4’s meals cost £2.50. The new children’s menu launches in all stores from September 2018.
