Elf on the Shelf is officially back, and searches are already soaring as families gear up for the Christmas countdown!
Play Mats Direct has uncovered that searches for the mischievous Elf have surged by 300% in the last month, and while interest typically peaks at around one million searches in December, November alone has already averaged 114K[1].
With social media trends driving up expectations for elaborate Elf displays, it’s easy to feel the pressure to go big[2]. But keeping the magic simple and fun can be just as impactful, without the stress or expense.
Ahead of the Elf’s arrival this December, the play experts at Play Mats Direct have teamed up with father of four, Simon Reynoldson, to showcase easy, budget-friendly ideas to delight kids without breaking the bank.
Simon Reynoldson, father of four from Skipton, says:
“You don’t need a big production to create Elf magic for your children! A little imagination and some festive spirit are all it takes to make Christmas feel extra special. Whether it’s your Elf getting into mischief with a bit of cake or simply tucking into a good Christmas story by the tree, these small moments are what truly bring the magic to life.”
Idea 1 (Left): The Elf “catching a cold” with a tiny tissue and a mini blanket. Perfect for those chilly winter mornings, your Elf is bundled up, ready to rest and recover!
Idea 2 (Right): A melted snowman scene with a splash of milk, a few twigs, and a couple of dog treats – a fun way to make it look like your Elf had a snowman mishap.
Idea 3 (Left): Caught in the act! Your Elf just couldn’t resist the delicious cake and climbed up for a sneaky treat!
Idea 4 (Right): Set up a cosy scene with your children’s favourite books and let your Elf enjoy a festive read.
Idea 5 (Left): The Elf making a great escape with a piece of string, leaving a trail for your kids to follow.
Idea 6 (Middle): Watch your little ones’ faces when they discover an Elf copycat on the scene.
Idea 7 (Right): Making snow angels in powdered sugar. Sprinkle a little sugar and let your Elf have fun creating snow angels – no snow required!
Magda Hajduk, Manager of Play Mats Direct, comments:
“Elf season should feel fun – not overwhelming. Our inspiration focuses on simple, achievable ideas that fit into real family life. A little planning goes a long way: keep a list of easy set-ups on your phone, reuse props, and don’t be afraid to repeat the classics; children love the familiarity. Most importantly, take a moment to enjoy it; the laughter, surprises, and little magical moments are what make the season truly special.”
