Top Marks for Gifting: Teacher presents that make the grade

As teachers wrap up another busy school year, parents and students are often looking for innovative ways to show how much they appreciate the work that they do. Dawn Ferdinand, Judge of the 2025 Pearson National Teaching Awards and a Headteacher says that just acknowledging a teacher’s hard work is a gift in itself.

Here she offers some end-of-year gift ideas for children and parents to show their appreciation.

It’s important to first remember that showing gratitude doesn’t have to mean a big spend. The saying “it’s the gesture that counts” really rings true here. With a little creativity and thought, a small token of gratitude will go a long way!

  1. Get crafty: Depending on where your skills lie, you could paint a picture, decorate a small plant pot, or handcraft an ornament. All of these can be a lovely addition to a classroom and act as a reminder of your appreciation.
  2. Be sentimental: Create a photo collage or a memory book with messages from students and parents that highlight your teacher’s positive impact.
  3. Share in an interest: Got a favourite book or poem? Give this to your teacher with a note saying what you loved about it and why you think they will enjoy it too.
  4. Give something sweet: No matter what, homemade baked goods will always go down a treat. (Just make sure to check for any allergens or dietary requirements!)
  5. Say thank you: With National Thank a Teacher Day on Wednesday 18th June 2025, students, children, and parents can all participate by sending a FREE e-card via the National Thank a Teacher website.

My final top tip is to just make sure to say thank you with a big smile and recount a favourite memory of something they said or did. Teachers don’t expect expensive presents; they appreciate knowing that their efforts have made a positive impact.
