How to Redecorate Your Teen’s Bedroom Successfully

If your teen has outgrown their childhood bedroom, it’s the right time for a revamp. If you cast your mind back to when you were a teenager, you will remember how important this space is as a personal refuge and place to relax and unwind. You want the bedroom to be practical, comfortable, and a reflection of their personality, so here we will take you through a few of the main considerations when redecorating their space.

Allow Them to Be Involved

First and foremost, you should involve them in the design process. No teenager wants their parent to decorate their room for them, so discuss how they want the room to look, so that you can create a space that will feel like their own. Be sure to discuss important elements like colour palette, furniture requirements, and decoration. By involving your teen in the process, you can encourage them to be creative, and it can be a shared activity that brings you closer together (these moments can be harder to come by with teenagers)!

Make Sure it’s Functional

The decor will obviously be important, but you also want to make sure that the space is functional. A teenager’s bedroom must often be multipurpose as a space that they use for sleeping, relaxing, studying, and socialising. This can be challenging, especially in smaller spaces, but it is possible. Draw up a floor plan so that you can find ways to maximise space and create different zones.

You can also maximise space by using fitted wardrobes as opposed to free-standing furniture – this provides a seamless look, while making the most of the space. You can also place a desk against the wall and have this function as a dresser. If there is still room available, consider additional furniture like an ottoman, or beanbag.

Let Them Express Their Style

Finally, you need to let them express their own style. All teens want their bedroom to be a reflection of their style – the more unique, the better. You may wish to create an accent or feature wall where they can put up pictures of their friends, posters, or their favourite artwork. Additional touches like a tapestry or fairy lights can make the space feel cosier.

If you want to redecorate your teen’s bedroom, these are the main areas to focus on. It is important to involve them in the process and allow them to make design decisions, but you also want to make sure that you design a space that is practical, functional, and comfortable.
